Hi - just back from 14 hours at the hspital with my mum. She is 84, has diabetes, on warfarin and lots of other stuff for AF, blood pressure etc. Today her nose started to bleed when she woke up. Dad (82) rang me and we were told to get her in to A&E. Everyone was very nice but nothing happens quickly in those places!! It took 3 hours before anyone took a blood test.

She has been admitted until they can stabilise her blood and sugar and work out why it happened. So, the next few days look like being very busy. There is only me for my parents, only me who drives etc. I got in tonight and have just sat! Can't move at all but need my bed. Just had to tell you - thanks for being there XX Ailsa

Hi Alisa

Oh you have had a very long day, hope you have a very restful night and feel a little bit better in the morning.

Hope you mum is sorted out at the hospital and can return home soon, hopefully you won t have to do too much running around, it is all very stressful and tiring. I have a dad of 89 yrs, and do keep him sorted with hospital trips etc. he is doing well overall.

Be thinking of you, take care Julia x

Oh Ailsa-it IS hard work being in hospitals for so long and visiting etc. I really hope that your Mum's problems are sorted for her and that you can manage to rest when you can.

Hi Ailsa

I know the impact this sort of day can have on you - with the worry as well as the long day. I hope your mum is ok and you manage to get some rest today. Let us know how she gets on.

Hi Ailsa

Sorry to hear about your Mum. Do hope they have some answers soon and you are able to get some rest. Hospitals have a habit of knocking the stuffing out of you with all that waiting around. Take care Ailsa,

Thanks for the good wishes ladies, really appreciate it.. I'm just back from the double round with Dad again. It is so draining!

Basically, Mum is still unstable. The INR that they measure in the blood should be about 2.5 and she takes warfarin to regulate it. Yesterday it was 5 which was what was causing her nosebleeds. Today it is atthe opposite end of the scale at 1.3, which puts her in danger of another stroke. The nurses seem to think that the Dr will want to admit her to another ward. I know this is probably for the best but it is all confusing for her and will be the 4th bed in 2 days.

I've been trying to google something that was queried on her notes - epistasis. I can't find anything simple about it - lots of biochemistry stuff - which was never my strong point! It seems o be about having 2 conditions where one may mask another. Given that Mum has had a stroke, has diabetes, AF, high blood pressure etc I can sort of understand what it means, but if anyone can explain in easy terms I would be very grateful.

Anyway, it looks like the half etrm hols will be spent to-ing and fro-ing. So glad I had the steroid depo last week and am feeling a lot better! Thanks for being there XX Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

I'm wondering if you've read the word wrong, as EPISTAXIS is the medical term for a nose bleed. I'm sure that would be written in her notes as she did have a nosebleed, and not Epistasis which is something to do with genetic stuff.

I'm sorry to hear your Mum is till unstable and I hope they can stabilise her without moving her to another ward.
You take care and try to get a good sleep tonight.

Love, Doreen xx

Hi Ailsa

Sorry things aren't looking so good for your mum at the moment. I was about to say Epistasis is do with genetic ordering and alleles etc., all interesting stuff but quite possibly not anything to do with your Mum; Doreen beat me to it! As she says Epistaxis is severe haemorrhaging from the nose and more likely what was in the notes.

Take care Ailsa and try and cut out any unnecessary stuff and just concentrate on the "must do". Try not to wear out the depo, you do need to rest too Smile

Aha ... Thankyou Lyn and Doreen!! That makes far more sense! I thought it was a bit late at 84 to be looking into her genes!!! Glad to have read that, I will definitely sleep easier now instead of thinking what on earth else she can have!!

One of the funnier bits of the day is that, at 82, my Dad has cooked his first chicken ( he declined dinner with us!) When I asked what he was goin to have with his chicken he smiled, than said "Salt. And no carrots. Don't tell your Mum!"

Where would we be without a sense of humour? Hope everyone is having a good Bank Hol weekend XX Ailsa

PS LYN - are you a native seasider?? I lived in Fleetwood till I went to Uni at 18. Still miss the beach!

I'm glad that's put your mind at rest Ailsa, I'm sure that is what they meant in her notes.
Bless your Dad, hope he enjoyed his chicken and salt! He must miss your Mum.
Have a good nights sleep now.

Hi Ailsa

I put up a reply when you first posted but for some reason, it hasn't appeared?!

Try to relax over the weekend - easier said than done, I know.

I love your Dad without having met him - a man after my own heart!

Love Jeanxxxxx

Hi Ailsa

I hope you're feeling a little less worried about your mum now. Hope your dad enjoyed his chicken.

I've been having nose bleeds, had a big one this pm. GP knows about them, I'm waitng for results of blood tests.

Hi Ailsa

Indeed I am, I was born at Milton Lodge (now a care home I think!) in Fleetwood which is about 4 miles down the road from where I am now! Small world, I live about a mile from the seafront on the edge of Cleveleys. Whereabouts were you in Fleetwood? Did you go to school locally?

Hope your Mum is feeling better today and your Dad is managing ... in his own way. What are they like?!

Lyn x

Milton Lodge for me too Lyn - December 1959! I went to the Grammar School on Poulton Rd, which turned into Hesketh High in my Upper 6th. My brother Keith was 2 years older and still lives in Blackpool. Mum and Dad moved to Warrington shortly after we settled here in 1990. What a small world!I had a couple of close friends who lived in Thornton but lost touch some years back, but still have my 2 'oldest and best' friends in Fleetwood. It's lovely to know you are there XX

Nothing doing with my mum today - a few more nose bleeds but not really seen any Drs with it being Bank Hols. Hopefully we will get some answers tomorrow.I'm trying to be smiley and positive for everyone, flying round and trying to make some headway with the stack of Key Stage 2 Sats papers that need marking!

Thanks for all the support and concern - really appreciate it. XX Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

I hope you`ve been able to get some news about your mum today - Bank Holidays in hospital are not good days to find answers to questions! I hope mum is feeling a bit better, and your dad too : it must be worrying for him.

It`s absolutely exhausting to-ing & fro-ing at visiting times - we had my dad in hospital for two weeks in February, and I was tired out long before he came home.

Take care of yourself,

Kathleen x
